Preparing for the New Lectionary

The Irish Church is preparing a new edition of the Lectionary for Mass, a project last undertaken 40 years ago. Collaborating with the Australian and New Zealand bishops, the updated Lectionary will use the Revised New Jerusalem Bible. This effort reflects a renewed Catholic embrace of Scripture, especially since Vatican II, which emphasized the Bible’s central role in liturgy and spiritual life. The new Lectionary will expand the range of readings significantly and include theological insights. Though complex and lengthy, the project aims to deepen faith, improve liturgical understanding, and renew parish life through greater engagement with God’s Word.
