Fifty years after the Second Vatican Council, this volume republishes three of the key documents on dialogue, together with an important introduction by Archbishop Kevin McDonald. Two are key texts of the Council which have had a defining effect on the role and profile of the Catholic Church in the world of today: the Decree on Ecumenism, Unitatis Redintegratio and the Declaration on Non-Christian Religions, Nostra Aetate.
The third, Ecclesiam Suam, Pope Paul VI’s Encyclical written during the Council, remains a vitally important document since it sets out the context and the significance of the two other documents. Successive popes have pleaded passionately for deeper engagement in this vital area of the Church’s life and these texts are a fundamental motivation and tool for understanding and involvement.
About the Author of the introduction: Archbishop Kevin McDonald is Chairman, Office for Interreligious Relations and the Committee for Catholic-Jewish Relations of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales; Consultor to the Pontifical Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews; and formerly Archbishop of Southwark.
