The policy of the Catholic Church with regard to marriages between Catholics and those of other faiths or none was set out in 1970 by Paul VI in a document entitled Matrimonia Mixta.
The particular situation in England and Wales, which John Paul II termed a special ecumenical terrain, led to a recognition on the part of its bishops, that Paul VI's document should be released as a directory. This was first done in 1970, then revised in 1977 and again most recently in 1990 in the light of John Paul II's visit to Britain and the new Code of Canon Law.
Throughout the book, Paul VI's Motu Proprio is annotated with the text of the directory produced by the Episcopal conference of England and Wales.
