There is much that is unique in the life of St Mary MacKillop, the co foundress of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Her story should not, however, be viewed in isolation.  She is part of a long tradition of women who responded to a divine call to serve God and those mostly in need by founding a religious institute.

In identifying themes in the lives of fifty foundresses - with a particular study of St Mary MacKillop - this book uncovers the many qualities these very humans share. Their stories, while different, have much in common including times of darkness, struggle, challenge and opposition, intermixed with experiences of love, joy and peace the world cannot give.  Their lives are an inspiration for all of us as we seek to live out our own God-given calling in life.

CARRIE LOCK has completed postgraduate studies in Formative Spirituality and Religious Education and is currently studying for a Master of Theological Studies. She works as Mission Lead at a Catholic College in Queensland.  Previously she spent twelve years in Asia exploring Eastern and Christian Spirituality.  A contemplative at heart, she likes to visit her personal retreat in outback Queensland where she enjoys writing and walks in nature.
